Il tema del video è l’uso dei media tecnologici come ‘modi’ di documentazione culturale. Una donna filma in uno zoo: come percepisce questa esperienza?

This video address the use of technological media as modes of cultural ‘documentation’. What discoveries does a woman make as she films in the zoo and what does she experience?

This Nervous Thing (1991) 16 min.
Santos mette in discussione il modo in cui lo spettatore percepisce le informazioni veicolate dai media. “Perduti nelle nostre creazioni, ci affidiamo a mezzi artificiali (giornali, TV…) per conoscere ciò che ci circonda. In questo modo creiamo eroi, città, caratteri, icone. Il risultato è ‘questa cosa nervosa’, una superficiale e dinamica lettura dell’essenza dell’essere umano”.

Santos questions the ways we perceive and receive information through the media. “Lost in our creations, we must use artificial means, such as newspapers and other media to simulate knowledge of what is around us. In doing so, we create heroes, cities, characters, icons... The result is ‘this nervous thing’, this dynamic and superficial reading of the essence of the human being”.

In questa ‘video-lettera’ Santos usa i titoli per creare delle cornici concettuali nelle quali guardare le immagini di Hong Kong (la città è ‘incorniciata’ dal fumo, dal suono e dall’acqua). Il montaggio, che alterna aspetti orientali e occidentali, appare perfettamente naturale in questa città tra due mondi.

In this ‘video-letter’ Santos uses titles to create a series of conceptual frames within which to watch the successive images (the city is framed as smoke, sound and water) of Hong Kong. And when the occidental and the oriental begin to cross over into each other in a ‘frame by frame’ montage the resulting synthesis of the two looks perfectly feasible here...

Neptune’s Choice (2003) 13 min.
Video-saggio su Amsterdam. In questa città il ‘sentimento’ della colonizzazione è parte della cultura. Qui la colonizzazione è un fatto quotidiano, non si cerca di nasconderla, emerge persino nel linguaggio. Dentro la superficie dell’acqua si trova il passato, sopra la superficie il presente. Flussi di turisti e immigrati colonizzano la città di Nettuno.

Neptune’s Choice is a video essay on Amsterdam. A city where the feeling of colonization is part of the culture, and is reflected in the water. Here colonization is normal, no attempts are made to hide it, not even in the language. In the water’s surface you find the past, on the water’s surface you find the present. Colonization by floods of tourists and immigrants.
