“Andare sempre avanti” è un imperativo del nostro tempo. In questa video-installazione la parola ‘progresso’ viene esplorata nei suoi molti significati. Il video inizia con immagini che ‘progrediscono’, ‘avanzano’: un treno sfreccia all’interno di un tunnel. Una voce fuori campo si chiede qual è il significato di questo progredire e intanto il movimento si sposta dai binari alla superficie dell’oceano Atlantico. La telecamera segue il flusso delle onde, nelle immagini scintillanti del mare si allontanano le preoccupazioni filosofiche e la voce esprime meraviglia di fronte alla bellezza della natura. Ma il flusso si interrompe bruscamente e un frenetico montaggio ci ricorda che anche la natura avanza in una sola direzione: ‘avanti’.
La visione si trasferisce ora in una città, luogo della cultura, opposta alla natura. La voce si chiede se la cultura è più libera della natura nel scegliere la direzione del suo movimento… le immagini si immergono nella città, fino a raggiungete il punto più alto del nostro pensiero progressivo, i grattacieli di New York. Il movimento si ferma improvvisamente su una immagine drammatica dello skyline di New York City: l’ Empire State Building si erge come il picco simbolico della nostra civiltà. Alla fine dei conti nessuna analisi è possibile, il progresso è un concetto universale, ancestrale. Un movimento necessario e senza scopo.

“Forward” is a poetical reflection on the progressive thinking of western culture. The video begins with images which are clearly ‘moving forward’: a train racing through a tunnel. The voice over asks what is the meaning of this forward movement. At the end of the tunnel the trip is suddenly continued on the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. For a moment it seems as if the whole notion of the initial question about progress has disappeared; the voice over appears only to be impressed by this phenomenon of natural beauty. This comes to an abrupt end in a hectic and very rapidly edited sequence in which the same ocean images follow the rapid text of the voice over in a bizarre fashion. The voice over comes to the conclusion that evolution in nature also only moves in one direction: ‘forward’. After reaching this conclusion peace seems to return and the images gradually appear to approach a city. The movement finally comes to a halt at the almost metaphorical high point of our ideas about progress: the skyscrapers of New York. In an image that is now made up of two static images alongside one another, the more demonic aspects of a singular drive toward progress briefly come into view. After another exalted bombardment of ‘progressive editing’ the images finally take another direction… Ultimately, the video offers no value judgment about the drive towards progress; it even seems to suggest that in essence this is a natural phenomenon. | www.wwvf.nl (2004)
